Hello Sir, I am preparingto get into an MBA course. I have forgotten what I did earlier in maths and vocabulary? So, kindly suggest me what can I do? (Sumit , Ranchi)

Hi Sumit, I wish I had a magic pill to solve your problem. If Vocabulary is poor, it would hamper your performance in the verbal section for sure. Now as far as Maths is concerned have forgotten could be a way of saying haven’t practiced much. There is no short cut to either of your problems. You must spend time with your books and study in order to make it to a MBA course in a top notch MBA college. (Answered by Mr. R. Shiva Kumar, Director, R&D-Career Launcher)

Dear sir, I am doing Bachelor Of Business Management from Bangalore currently in 2rd year(4th semester) I want to know what is the best time to start for preparation for an MBA course and which option is better either to study for an MBA degree here or abroad. Please help me out sir (Manish Sankhla , Bangalore)

Dear Manish, For doing an MBA course in India, you should start preparing right now for CAT and other MBA entrance exams. I presume that you are now in pre-final year and will complete your BBM in 2010. For an MBA course from abroad, good B-schools in USA need 16 years of education and work experience of more than a couple of years. B-schools in Australia and UK are less stringent. For US, you will have to write GMAT and it will be a good idea to prepare for it rite it now since the score is valid for five years. (Answered by Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi)

Dear Sir, I m B.Sc Agri graduate 32 yr old & having 8 yrs of work experience in Agri input marketing, out of which 3 yrs managerial cadre with 5 lacs package per annum. Now I wanted to go for one yr MBA course from IIM or any other equivalent institute. I have decided to go for CAT preparation this year to get MBA admission in coming academic year in MBA course. Kindly guide me, how to prepare for the CAT/GMAT exams. (Basavaraddi , Karnataka)

Dear Basavradddi, You will need to prepare well in areas of Mathematics, Logical Ability and English. You may start either by buying books available in the market for CAT preparation or by joining a coaching institute. Strong fundamentals, ability to apply the same and good time management are important in cracking CAT. Since the competition to get into IIMs is intense, you need to benchmark yourself to understand your relative strengths & weaknesses and target a percentile rank of 99+ which will be the range to achieve admission into an MBA course in IIMs. (Answered by Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi)

What is the weight age of hobbies towards preparation for an MBA course. Is it necessary to develop one as part of said preparation? How much time should be dedicated towards this? (Harish , Pune)

Dear Harish, it is not mandatory that you need a hobby to get into a good MBA college. You are expected to have a good understanding of what is happening around you and an ability to look at these events in a logical and analytical manner. Please do not try to develop a hobby just because you feel it matters in getting into a good MBA college for an MBA course. (Answered by Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi)

PGDM or MBA PGDM More Industry Relevant Says XIMB Director

One of the key questions that strike the minds of many management education aspirants is: Should I join a PGDM programme or a MBA programme? The aspirants are most often in a dilemma with respect to these two terms ‘PGDM’ and ‘MBA’, as many of them have no clear idea on the exact differences between the two.

Most often, many of the students feel that PGDM is a Diploma, whereas MBA is a Degree, and because of this they think that PGDM is lesser qualification than MBA.

To break the myth and to find out the basic difference between PGDM and MBA, MBAUniverse.com talked to Directors and Deans of India’s leading B-schools. The answers will now be presented to you as a part of the MBAUniverse.com series “PGDM Vs MBA – Making the choice”.

We start this series by bringing to you the answers from Fr. PT Joseph, Director, XIM Bhubaneswar (XIMB). XIMB is ranked amongst the top ten B-schools of the country.

Q. How are PGDM programmes different from MBA programmes?
A.
The major differences are:

– PGDM programmes are ‘Diploma’ programmes which are granted by the institutions which are recognized by Government of India through the Ministry of HRD or AICTE. The MBA programmes are offered by business schools which are mandatorily affiliated to a University, usually a technical University of the respective states.
— The PGDM programmes are offered to students under the CAT/XAT/MAT entrance examinations, while the students undertaking MBA are admitted mainly through the respective State Government’s Joint Entrance Examination.
— PGDM Programmes are more flexible and customized while MBA programmes are University run and therefore its adaptability is difficult at short notice.

In foreign countries, they do not understand that PGDM is equivalent to MBA. Very often students have to explain that it is equivalent to MBA. So we get equivalence certificate from AIU (Association of Indian Universities). Some PGDM institutions do not get that equivalence and are not listed in AIU. Because of that, students passing out of these institutions may find it difficult to go for higher studies.

Q. What are the USPs of PGDM that make it attractive for the student community?
A.
PGDM programmes usually provide more scope for learning as the course curriculum is customized to the needs of a specific institute’s students.

It also provides flexibility in pedagogical systems, teaching-learning process, examination schedules and timely evaluation and convocations whereas the MBA programmes are stifled due to the University hierarchy which takes longer period of time to amend its curriculum and policies and thereby curbs innovation and creativity in the academic culture.

Q. Which do you think is superior: MBA or PGDM? …and Why?
A.
PGDM programmes are superior, especially due to their contemporary approach, flexible modules and industry relevance whereas the MBA programmes suffer from outdated syllabi and lack of customized approach for a particular segment of students. The PGDM programmes are dynamic in nature while MBA programmes due to their affiliation to Universities are marred by bureaucratization.

Q. What is your advice to the students who aspire to pursue a management programme?
A.
My advice to the aspirants who are intending to undertake their careers in business management is to opt for PGDM programmes from reputed institutions like the IIMs, XLRI, XIMB, MDI, FMS and similar institutions and make sure that equivalence to MB is given to that program by AIU.

They should opt for CAT, XAT, MAT as entrance examinations and ensure that they score well across all the sub-sections of the test. They need to prepare effectively and showcase their strengths at the Group Discussion and Personal Interview rounds. They need to brush up their communication skills and exhibit positive attitude and team-work.

Gmat | Gmat Test Preparation | Gmat course

GMAT is an entrance test that picks up the suitable candidates for taking admissions into business management programs in reputed B-schools located across the globe. Based on the GMAT scores and a few other measuring parameters set by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council), candidates get admissions in reputed schools like the ones located in the USA and Canada. Hence, before preparing one’s mind to write GMAT, one must be adorned with a good strategy first. In this article, I am going to pen something on the strategies one should adopt to crack the GMAT Reading Comprehension section.

GMAT reading comprehension passages which are basically long and obscure ask questions from three academic disciplines like Science, Social Science and Business; they test a candidate’s ability to find answers in the lines, his ability to understand the central theme of the passage with the help of inferences and his capacity to infer the information from the complex sentence structures etc. Apart from this, the passage presents four types of important questions based on Fact, Inference, Main Idea and Tone. Out of the three passages, Science passages are a little easier in the sense they are factual in nature. Social Science passages are interesting to read but don’t present facts directly. Hence, here, a candidate has to draw conclusion from the supported ideas presented in the passage. Questions based on Main idea test a candidate’s understanding of the overall theme of the passage and a bit hard to answer. In tone based questions, the candidate has to identify the tone and the intention of the author by drawing inference from the passage.

All information from each paragraph should be jotted down on scrap papers initially which will, later, help a candidate remember them while answering the questions. In Reading Comprehension questions, the test-makers intend to confuse candidates by presenting same answer choices with a slight difference in meaning. Hence, one must try to compare the information presented in the choices with that of the passages and then arrive at the answer. Second, a candidate should read the first question of the passage before going through it to get an idea about the type of information he exactly needs in the passage. However, one must put oneself in the author’s shoes and ask a series of questions to oneself like What is the main idea of the passage? What theme does the author want to present? What does the author want the readers to do in the passages? etc. which, in turn, help him find the clear idea. One may take up as many GMAT practice tests as possible to optimize one’s score.
